VMC supplies, installs and supports the finest cashless payment systems for vending machines available in Britain today. Payter, Pax and Newland, multiple world-class readers, one expert partner. PCI DSS compliant. Fits any machine. Works from day one.

Why Cashless Vending Matters

Cash is no longer King. Your Vending Machines need to know that.

Consumers have made their preference clear. Over 83% of people in the UK now use contactless payments, and contactless now accounts for more than a quarter of all UK transactions, close to 9.6 billion payments every year. For vending operators running office vending machines, snack walls, hot drink stations, or full micro-market vending machine setups, the message is simple: if your machine only takes coins, you are turning customers away.

Fitting a card reader for vending machines is no longer a premium upgrade reserved for large operators. It is the baseline expectation of any consumer who walks up to a machine today. People do not carry coins. Many do not carry notes either. They carry a card, a phone, or a smartwatch, and they tap to pay without thinking twice. The growth of mobile wallet usage which now accounts for 62% of all cashless transactions according to an industry census from the Automated Vending Association, also presents opportunities for operators to engage consumers in new ways. A machine that cannot accommodate todays behaviours loses sales on every interaction where a customer shrugs and walks away empty-handed.

VMC have been experts in cashless payments since 1991. We design, supply, and support cashless payment systems for vending machines across the UK. Our hardware is manufactured and tested to the highest industry standards and our software integrates with your existing infrastructure. Our support team sits in the UK and always picks up the phone so you never need to worry about getting the support you need. We work with some of the most respected names in unattended payment technology: Payter, Newland, and Pax.

Whether you run a single coffee machine in a small office or manage a national estate of hundreds of smart vending units, VMC has a vending card reader solution that fits your machines, your budget, and your customers’ expectations.

What Happens When You Go Cashless

The difference is immediate and measurable. Operators who retrofit vending machines with contactless payment capability consistently report revenue uplift in the range of 25–40% on previously coin-only machines. The reasons are straightforward. Customers spend more per transaction when they tap a card than when they count out coins; there is no psychological ceiling set by what happens to be in their pocket. Impulse purchases increase. Machines become accessible to a large portion of the population who simply do not carry cash at all any more.

Beyond the revenue effect, cashless payment systems for vending machines bring significant operational benefits. Modern readers connect via 4G LTE or Ethernet, feeding real-time transaction data to a cloud dashboard.  Cash handling, the costly and time-consuming task of emptying and counting coin mechanisms, is either eliminated entirely or dramatically reduced.

Security improves, too. A machine with little or no cash on site is a far less attractive target for vandalism and theft. Many operators find that fitting a card vending machine payment solution in high-risk locations pays for itself through reduced damage alone.

Our Card Reader Range

Payter P6 Series

P6 Series - Purpose-Built for Unattended Payments

Payter P68 card reader for vending machines

The Payter P6 series is arguably the most respected vending card reader platform in Europe. Built specifically for unattended points of sale, it delivers fast, secure, multi-scheme contactless payments in a robust, vandal-resistant housing sized to EVA (European Vending Association) specification, meaning it drops straight into the payment aperture of virtually any modern vending machine with zero modification.

Payter Apollo

Apollo & ApolloMax — Ultra-Slim Next-Generation Terminal

Payter Apollo card reader for vending machines
The Payter Apollo is the successor to the P6 series and one of the most technically advanced vending card readers available in the UK today. At just 28.5 mm deep with a 3.5-inch IPS touchscreen, a built-in QR code camera, and an IP65/IK09-rated housing, it fits virtually any machine while delivering a payment and engagement experience that far exceeds older terminal designs. The ApolloMax variant adds PIN-on-glass and magnetic stripe for deployments where chip-and-PIN or loyalty card scanning is required.

Pax IM25

Android-Powered Unattended Payments

Pax IM25 card reader for vending machines

The PAX IM25 is a contactless Android unattended payment terminal built specifically for vending, EV charging, parking, and self-service kiosk environments. Running PayDroid OS 10 on a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor, it delivers reliable, fast transaction handling in a compact EVA-compliant housing rated to IP65 and IK09. Available in both flush-mount and surface-mount versions, it drops into any standard vending aperture and takes card payments from day one.

Newland U200

Global Terminal Leader

Newland Smart Payment Technologies (SPT) card reader for vending machines
The Newland U200 is a purpose-built compact unattended terminal designed to operate reliably wherever a vending machine is placed — indoors, outdoors, in cold storage corridors, or on exposed sites. Waterproof, dustproof, impact-resistant, and engineered to function in temperatures as low as −30°C, the U200 sets a durability benchmark that most terminals cannot match. It is the first device certified under the ep2 Specification 8.2.0 accessibility standard, meeting EN 301 549 requirements for visually impaired users at unattended points of sale.

Fitting a Vending Machine Contactless Payment Reader Is Simpler Than You Think

One of the most common objections VMC hears from vending operators is that their machines are too old, too unusual, or too complicated to accept a card reader for vending machine retrofit. In the vast majority of cases, that concern is unfounded. Modern cashless payment systems for vending machines are designed with backward compatibility in mind. The Multidrop Bus (MDB) standard, used by virtually every commercial vending machine manufactured since the early 1990s, provides a universal communication interface that our readers plug directly into.

The MDB protocol is the backbone of unattended payment integration. It allows the payment terminal to communicate with the vending machine controller. It receives the product price, signals authorisation, and confirms the transaction. There is no need for custom software on the machine side. No engineering modifications to the cabinet. In most cases you can have a reader fitted, and taking live payments within the same working day.

    1. Survey & selection. Our team assesses your machine model, location, and any other requirements to recommend the right reader, Payter, Pax, or Newland for your specific setup.
    2. Merchant account setup. We coordinate the set up of your payment acquiring relationship, ensuring competitive transaction rates and fast settlement to your bank account.
    3. Physical installation. The reader mounts in the standard payment aperture or is surface-mounted using our angle accessory kit.
    4. Connectivity & configuration. The terminal is registered on our platform and your management dashboard is set up with your login credentials.
    5. Go live. Your machine is now a fully functional, contactless payment terminal, accepting Visa, Mastercard, American Express (if required), Apple Pay, Google Pay, and more.
    6. Ongoing support. Our UK-based support team is available to resolve any issues.

What About Machines Without MDB?

Some older or specialist machines may use other interfaces such as pulse, our readers support multiple interface options.  Whatever your machine communicates over, talk to us and we can reccommend what solution would work best for you.

In some instances VMC can also offer bespoke integration. We have been helping clients solve their challenges since 1991, and very few configurations defeat us.

Choosing the right card reader for your Vending Machine.

Not every vending scenario calls for the same reader. The table below gives you a clear view of how Payter, Pax, and Newland compare across the key criteria most operators use when selecting a vending card reader. All three are excellent products. The right choice depends on your machine type, site environment, connectivity, and whether you need open-loop payment only or a combination of open-loop and closed-loop wallet functionality.

Why Choose VMC

Britain's most experienced cashless vending specialists

VMC has been designing, building, and installing cashless payment systems since 1991. That is over three decades of accumulated knowledge about what works in the real world of British vending, the quirks of legacy machine controllers, the challenges of poor-connectivity locations, the demands of large operators managing hundreds of machines, and the specific needs of small businesses fitting their very first card reader for vending machine UK use.

We are not a reseller that drops hardware in a box and ships it out. We are engineers and payment specialists who take the time to understand exactly what you need before recommending a solution. If the Payter reader suits your estate, we will tell you so. If Pax’s  flexibility is more important to your commercial situation, we will say that instead. If Newlands smart vending data capabilities are what your operation really requires, that is what we will propose. Our commercial interests are aligned with yours: we grow when our customers grow. We give honest advice rather than pushing the products.

Most importantly we will listen to you and what challenges you face and propose a solution that will make real world improvements to your operation.

What makes a great card reader for Vending?

The great card reader question is one we hear often. Operators who have been burned by unreliable equipment, poor support, or exorbitant transaction fees come to us wanting clarity. Here is how we evaluate every reader we consider stocking.

Payment scheme coverage matters. A reader that only accepts Visa and Mastercard is inadequate. Modern British consumers pay with a smartphone using Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Monzo, Starling, Amex and a dozen other fintech products. A vending machine contactless payment solution must accept all of these without fuss. All of our readers do exactly that.

Reliability is non-negotiable. A vending machine that cannot take payment is worse than one with a coin mechanism fault, at least the customer knows why the coin mechanism fails. A card reader that drops transactions, loses connectivity, or fails silently destroys customer trust and operator revenue simultaneously.

Transaction speed is critical at high-footfall locations. Customers at a coffee machine between 08:00 and 09:00 are in a hurry. A reader that takes five seconds to authorise a payment creates a queue. Our readers process the typical contactless transaction in under two seconds.

Security, compliance & your responsibilities

Every cashless payment system for vending machines that VMC supplies is fully PCI DSS compliant. PCI DSS, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, is the global framework that governs how card data is collected, stored, and transmitted. Compliance is not optional: it is a contractual requirement of every merchant account, and failure to comply can result in substantial fines from acquiring banks.

Our readers use end-to-end encryption from the moment a card is presented. Cardholder data is never stored on the device. All data in transit uses TLS encryption over secure connections. SRED (Secure Reading and Exchange of Data) technology, built into the Payter P6 series, ensures that even the hardware itself cannot be compromised by physical tampering without immediately alerting the system.

VMC holds all relevant industry accreditations and works exclusively with PCI DSS-compliant payment service providers. When you buy from VMC, you buy compliance as well as hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vending Card Readers

Will a card reader work on my existing vending machine?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. If your machine was manufactured after approximately 1990 and uses the MDB (Multi-Drop Bus) standard, which covers virtually all commercial vending machines sold in the UK, one of our readers can connect to it without modification. Machines using the pulse interface are also supported. If you are unsure what interface your machine uses, talk to our team who can help identify the correct connection method. We also handle older or unusual machines through bespoke integration.

How long does installation take?

A standard retrofit installation on a single machine typically takes between one and three hours, depending on machine type and site conditions. Most machines are live and taking card payments on the day of installation.

Do I need a fixed internet connection at the machine location?

No. All of our reader brands support 4G LTE connectivity via an integrated or external SIM card modem, which means your machine can accept card payments anywhere with mobile network coverage. For locations with good fixed infrastructure, LAN/Ethernet connectivity is also available.

What payment methods will my customers be able to use?

All readers supplied by VMC accept all major credit and debit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, plus contactless versions of these cards. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay are accepted on all models. QR code payments and RFID/NFC are supported on selected models.

How quickly are transaction funds settled into my bank account?

Settlement timescales depend on your acquiring bank and the settlement configuration agreed at the time of merchant account setup. We always clarify settlement terms as part of the onboarding process, so there are no surprises.

Is a vending card reader secure for my customers?

Yes. All readers supplied by VMC are fully PCI DSS compliant, which is the global standard for secure card payment processing. Cardholder data is end-to-end encrypted from the moment the card is presented. No sensitive card data is stored on the device. Anti-tamper mechanisms alert the system instantly if physical interference is attempted. Our readers are used daily by thousands of consumers across the UK, and cardholder fraud on unattended payment terminals is exceptionally rare thanks to these protections.

Can the card reader also function as a telemetry device?

Yes, all reader brands we supply offer telemetry functionality, including real-time sales data, offline status and integrate with industry standard vending management systems.  For operators who already use a vending management system (VMS), our readers integrate via standard APIs and EVA DTS protocols.
